Blumenort School Two Classrooms Addition and Mechanical Upgrades

About the project

The expansion of Blumenort School in rural Manitoba involved the construction of two new classroom additions, which significantly expanded the school’s capacity. The scope of work involved extensive site preparation, including civil site work to prepare the area for the new structures and the installation of piles and footings. The additions increase the size of the school to 42,563 square feet and will help satisfy the growth while providing opportunities for diversity and additional programming. The additional classrooms were part of the Provincial Government’s 20-K3 initiative to have no more than 20 students in each Kindergarten to Grade 3 classroom.

Concrete and masonry work played a pivotal role in forming the core structure of the classrooms, providing both durability and aesthetic appeal. A new steel structure was erected to support the classrooms, designed to accommodate the architectural and functional needs of the space. The roofing system is designed to meet stringent weatherproofing and insulation requirements, ensuring long-term performance and energy efficiency. The classroom additions include washroom facilities in both rooms.

In addition to the structural work, the project included mechanical and electrical upgrades to the school to ensure the new classrooms met modern standards for heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting and power supply. The electrical systems are designed to support both the current needs of the growing community and future technological advancements, while the mechanical systems were optimized for energy efficiency and comfort.

Throughout the project, coordination between site crews, subcontractors, and school staff was essential to minimize disruptions, especially since the school remained in use during construction. The project was successfully completed on time, with all systems integrated seamlessly into the existing infrastructure.
