Billy Bishop Airport Security Fence and Gates Replacement

About the project

Located at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport in Toronto, Ontario, this project involved the removal and replacement of approximately 2,200 metres of perimeter security fencing and gates. The work took place at an operational airfield, requiring detailed planning, night work and adherence to stringent safety protocols to ensure minimal disruption to airport operations.

The scope of the project included the installation of a 2.13-metre-high chain-link fence topped with three strands of barbed wire for enhanced security. The fence was partially buried 600 millimetres into the ground to provide additional stability. The project also incorporated seven new 6.1-metre swing gates, two pedestrian gates, and a motorized sliding cantilever gate at Gate 130, supported by new raceways extending from the existing utility building to supply power. A solar-powered floodlight with a dedicated pole and foundation was installed at Gate 130, along with eight new foundations to accommodate a new Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS).

Existing fence, gates and foundations were carefully removed and disposed of offsite, followed by full site restoration to meet environmental and operational requirements. New signage was installed to align with updated security protocols.

The project’s proximity to an active airfield demanded exceptional coordination between the project team and airport authorities. Construction activities were strategically scheduled during off-peak hours, including nighttime work, to minimize operational disruptions. The team successfully navigated logistical and regulatory challenges, delivering a secure, modernized fencing system that enhances the safety and functionality of the airport. The upgraded infrastructure supports the airport’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high security standards while facilitating efficient operations.
