New Foods Store for Misipawistik Cree Nation
About the project
Located in the northern community of Misipawistik Cree Nation, this new food store was a Design-Build collaboration with Nejmark Architects. Given the remote location, the use of prefabricated and modular building systems was critical to suit the project timing and success. Special consideration was taken to address limited local labour availability and remote location along with tight schedule.
The remote location of the food store required careful attention to building systems, materials and sequencing of construction. This was addressed by using the Murox system for the superstructure and exterior walls. Tight timelines were addressed by providing phased partial permit submissions to allow CPI to order long delivery items like steel and HVAC, and to assist with construction schedule including siteworks, foundation and superstructure, base building and tenant improvements.
CPI worked with Canam to design a Murox prefabricated steel food store superstructure and metal building envelope system that could be shipped and assembled on-site. The team took a minimalist cost-effective approach, leveraging red Murox wall panels to provide association to the Misipawistik Cree Nation logo of a red sun behind a forested island. Included with the Murox system were all interior walls, decking, windows and doors, and mezzanine, making it an efficient way to construct the building.
