New Notre Dame Healthcare Centre

Project Description

This new LEED Silver 22,600 square foot Healthcare centre added an emergency department, imaging and laboratory diagnostic services, an obstetrical/birth unit, in-patient and out-patient services, and a bilingual medical education program. It also added 10 new beds, a new labor and delivery room, x-ray room, laboratory, triage area, kitchen and laundry facility.

Healthcare for the Future

The Centre de Santé Notre Dame Healthcare Centre (NDHC) was Phase 2 of the community’s vision to create a medical campus. It provides clients and community members with health services on-site and improves access to services in the growing community. This new facility replaced the smaller, outdated facility originally built in 1950. Designated bilingual by the Province of Manitoba, the Healthcare campus provides health-care services in both French and English.

The Healthcare centre uses an expanded geothermal system, state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical infrastructure, energy-efficient windows and doors and steel beam construction. The new 7,170 square foot kitchen/laundry area included walk-in freezer and cooler, baker’s preparation area, vegetable and preparation area, cook’s set-up area and washing and cart marshaling area.

Working on a Live Site

NDHC was constructed on a live site, adjacent to the existing personal care home (Foyer Notre Dame) and primary health care centre (Centre Albert-Galliot). Care was taken to not disrupt tenants, ensure access and maintain services to these buildings during construction. Construction materials were delivered on a strict schedule, and the existing buildings were later connected to NDHC via enclosed walkways.

Infection Control

Infection control and monitoring to protect patients, visitors and healthcare providers was key. This included determining traffic routes for construction material, workers and debris, barriers to seal functioning areas from construction and strategies for hand hygiene, personal protective equipment and cleaning.
