Ecole Real-Berard School Energy-Efficient Roof and Building Envelope Upgrade

Project Description

Updated Roof and Envelope

Overall, this project is designed to not only upgrade the physical components of Buildings A, B and E, but also to enhance their functionality, safety, and sustainability for years to come.

The original École Communautaire Réal-Bérard 1 story building was first constructed in 1960 (Building A), with an addition to the north side constructed in 1977 (Building B & E) and to the east side constructed in 2000 (Building B2 & D). Another addition (Daycare) was constructed on the west side of the 1977 building in 2010 (Building B3). The project involved the careful demolition and removal of the existing building envelope, roofing, and windows, followed by the installation of new, high-performance materials to provide long-lasting protection and improved energy efficiency. The scope of work was extensive and covered multiple areas:

Architectural

Careful planning and design were done to ensure the new windows and roof system could be seamlessly integrated with the existing architecture, preserving the buildings aesthetics while integrating modern materials and techniques.

Structural

Significant modifications and reinforcements were made to the existing buildings to accommodate the new envelope systems and roofing upgrades, to ensure continued safety and compliance with current building codes.

Mechanical and Electrical

To ensure HVAC and other mechanical components were optimized for the new building envelope, these systems were tested and adjusted as needed. This included monitoring and evaluation for impact on airflow and temperature regulation. Electrical systems related to the envelope and roofing upgrades were also reviewed and updated to meet the current standards and ensure safety and efficiency.

Interior Renovations

The interior renovations aimed to update the functionality and appearance of key spaces, while addressing the interior impact of the exterior changes. This involved careful coordination to protect and enhance interior finishes, ensuring the new windows seamlessly integrated with the existing design while providing improved natural light and energy efficiency. Walls, floors and ceilings were repaired and refinished to complement the updated window installations. This not only restored the aesthetic appeal of the interiors but also enhanced their durability and ease of maintenance. In some cases, new materials were chosen to improve acoustics, thermal comfort and resilience in high-traffic areas.
