University College of the North Life Safety Upgrades and Renovations

About the project

The University College of the North (UCN) campus in The Pas is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade to its life safety and fire protection systems, enhancing the safety and functionality of the facility for students, staff, and faculty. This project combines critical fire safety improvements with classroom restoration and energy-efficient upgrades, all while the campus remains fully operational.

The work includes the design and installation of a modern sprinkler system, integration of new fire dampers, and targeted upgrades to existing fire separations. Missing fire stopping at required separations is being installed, and all non-functional roll-up fire doors are being removed. Non-rated doors and frames at fire separation points are being replaced with code-compliant assemblies to meet current fire safety standards.

Construction is carefully phased and coordinated around UCN’s academic calendar to minimize disruption to classes and campus activities. Close collaboration with university administration and facility management ensures work schedules align with daily operations, maintaining a safe environment throughout the project.

In addition to fire safety upgrades, the project includes abatement and restoration of several main floor classrooms. This includes asbestos remediation, installation of new fire-rated suspended ceilings, and replacement of existing lighting with energy-efficient LED fixtures. These enhancements not only improve safety but also contribute to a modern, sustainable, and comfortable learning environment.
